According to the local media reports, 3% of the Finland adult population are problem gamblers.
40,000 gamblers, which means two-thirds of Finland's potentially problem gamblers, suffer from serious gambling addictions.
This ratio is much higher compared to the United Kingdom's problem gambling population, which is of 0.06%.
“From the point of view of preventing problems, a system directly under state or public control is at least theoretically better able to intervene in problems. However the level of compulsive gambling appears to be about the same regardless of what kind of system is in effect,” said Dr. Tuukka Tammi, Research Manager at the A-Clinic Foundation and chair of the Finnish Society for Alcohol and Drug Research.
Most problem gambling in Finland is associated with games operated by the three state monopolies: Veikkaus, the Slot Machine Association (RAY) and Fintoto.
Gambling has grown in popularity within Finland in the last couple of years. A growing number of adults are drawn and overwhelmed by the internet games. They became sad, alone, and gambling become part of their everyday life. Moreover, they have debt problems because they loose their control towards gambling and they create social, personal and other financial problems for their families.
Here are the available gambling opportunities in Finland:
- 2 casinos;
- 18,000 slot machines;
- 55 gaming arcades;
- 43 racetracks;
- Over 4,000 game retail outlets;
- 287 restaurants with casino table games.
In Finland, gambling and lottery services generate money for the non-profit organizations and the private companies are not allowed to lead lotteries.
