29/10/2009, Casino
He declared :"We have decided on a definitive cut." Poland is working on a draft bill that will ban slots – known as “one-armed bandits” - outside casinos. “In the course of five years, locations with slot machines should disappear from Poland by 100 per cent,” the Prime Minister Donald Tusk declared. Taxes on gambling machines would rise from €180 per month to at least €480. The government also plans that all gambling salons and gambling machines with low winnings to be withdrawn from the market in a few years. The “war on gambling” will also include online gambling websites that, although there are illegal, there are still available in Poland. The 24,000 slot machines from Poland are usually placed in shopping malls, bus and train stations, or in fast food restaurants. “It seems that Prime Minister Donald Tusk has scored an own goal because gambling in Poland will become a part of the black economy,” said Stanislaw Matuszewski from the Chamber of Producers and Operators of Amusement Machines, warning that many forms of betting can go underground, if the bill is introduced. In 2008, the gambling industry made a profit of almost $6 billion, up by some 40% from the previous year. Related news
