Poker Games – Skill vs. Chance
08/12/2009, Players
I say poker is a randomized game of skill and I will try to explain this from different angles. Other games are easy to identify either there are games of skill, or games of chance. Football, for example, is mostly about skill, but chance also influences the game as well. Let's think about tennis too. Skill is definitely an important component in tennis, but chance has also his influence in the game, arising from the impact of many random elements such as the sun, the wind, etc. In poker the situation is quite similar. In almost every existing game or sport, there is an element of skill and an element of chance. And some influence of chance appears in almost every moment of our lives, not only in games. In my opinion, playing poker requires great skills. Thing about the poker tournaments where best skilled and more experienced players always outperform their less skilled competitors. The fact that a significant number of players excel repeatedly in poker competitions is the best indication that poker is mainly a game of skill, the major component of the game. Poker game implies a precise mathematical analysis and during each game a player should be capable of estimating the precise probability of improving his hand when the turn or river community cards will be dealt. Bluffing is an important part of the game of poker and it is crucial for a winning player to stay unpredictable and to know the strategy of his opponents. Skilled players have a significant advantage over the unskilled ones, if they are able to adjust their strategy to the number of players. In March 2009, Cigital, Inc., in cooperation with Rational Entertainment Limited (REEL) and PokerStars, released the findings of their 103 million-hand study. The study was entitled “The Statistical Analysis of Texas Hold'em” and it concluded that the outcomes of 103 million observed games of Texas Hold'em and poker was determined by skill more often than by chance, and by a significant margin. This is another proof for the legal and political system from America in order to make the right decisions and to legalize and regulate poker. “As a poker player I can tell you that knowing when to hold or fold is not based solely on the cards that are dealt, but a series of decisions based on skill and the actions taken by the other players. This study provides the raw data to back up the compelling arguments made by poker players around the world that it’s skill, not pure luck, that determines the outcome of the game,” said PPA Chairman and former Senator Alfonse D’Amato. PPA Executive Director John Pappas added: “The question of whether poker is a game of predominant skill or chance is not about the player’s ego, but the nature and legal protections of the game. In courtrooms across the country, judges and juries are finding that poker is a game of skill - not chance like lotteries or slot machines - and this study confirms that fact.” Related articles
